District Council Elections 2019

These pages refer to the South Hams District Council elections on 2nd May 2019. Labour put forward 16 candidates. Unfortunately we did not take any seats, though we gained a creditable share of the vote in many places including Totnes and Dartmouth. The Conservative majority on SHDC was reduced to one. We also campaigned in Plymouth, where Labour retained the City Council with one additional seat.

Some SHDC candidates are members of and supported by SW Devon CLP.
Our priorities as elected District Councillors will be:
- Housing and homelessness – truly affordable housing for local people to buy and rent; no developments without investment in infrastructure
- The environment – South Hams to plan for a carbon neutral future and support urgent action to tackle climate change
- Action on poverty and homelessness – oppose the roll-out of Universal Credit and associated changes in Council Tax relief
- Support for local services – no to privatisation; investment in the services that local people need
- A focus on young people, families, and those in need of care – the South Hams as a place for everyone, for all of our lives
- Full financial accountability – tax-payers’ money spent on local services, not risky financial investments
- No more decisions behind closed doors – open, transparent decision making with full community involvement
